Migraine headaches are the most common type of vascular headaches. Migraine headaches are characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head, upset stomach and disturbed vision.

Migraine headaches are part of the vascular group, which are so named because they are thought to involve abnormal function of the brain's blood vessels or vascular system.

A classic migraine headache’s pain may be described as intense, throbbing, or pounding and is felt in the forehead, temple, ear, jaw, or around the eye. Classic migraine starts on one side of the head but may eventually spread to the other side and can last from 1 to 2 pain-wracked days.

Common migraine is a term that reflects the disorder's greater occurrence in the general population. Sufferers of this type of migraine headache experience a variety of vague symptoms beforehand, including mental fuzziness, mood changes, fatigue, and unusual retention of fluids. During the headache phase of a common migraine, a person may have diarrhea and increased urination, as well as nausea and vomiting. Common migraine pain can last 3 or 4 days.

Headaches are classed by doctors as belonging to 4 classes:

1)     Vascular – headaches are caused by abnormal blood flow changes in the brain. Include migraine headaches

2)     Muscle contraction  – caused by sustained tension in the muscles of the face and neck.

3)     Traction headaches happen when nerve fibers are pulled, stretched, or displaced

4)     Inflammatory headaches are caused by irritation or infection of the arteries or nerves in the head, sinuses, spine, neck, ears, or teeth.
